DIY Permanent Hair Removal for Mens
When men and women dye their hair at home, they risk making a mistake or choosing a color that is not ideal. Luckily, it is possible to correct the permanent dye problems by removing the offending hair color. The process is not foolproof and gives various results depending on the color of dye used and how often. Do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiasts have the choice of using a store-bought dye remover or removing the hair color with one of several home remedies.
Store-Bought Dye Removers
Dye removers use harsh chemicals to remove dye from the hair. Some work similarly to bleach, while others just strip the extra color from hair.
My Hairdresser
My Hairdresser removes permanent hair color without using bleach. The application takes 20 minutes, although reapplication may be necessary on hair dyed multiple times or on stubborn colors. The color remover does not work on henna dyes or semi-permanent dyes.
L'Oreal Haircolor Remover
L'Oreal offers several hair color removers. The L'Oreal Paris Colorist Secrets Haircolor Remover contains peroxide and removes both permanent and salon formulas. L'Oreal also has powder formulas available, such as Effasol. This removes the tint from hair, but does not restore the hair back to its natural color. L'Oreal produces the product ColorZap, which works the same way as the powder formulas, leaving the hair free of tint and ready for a new color.
Color Oops
Color Oops is ammonia and bleach free. It restores hair to its original shade, unless the permanent dye lightened the hair. The soy protein and aloe vera in this remover leaves the hair soft and conditioned. It removes both semi-permanent and permanent colors and is gentle enough for the hair to accept dye again the same day.
DIY Methods of Hair Color Removal
There are several do-it-yourself methods for removing hair color. The results of the DIY methods vary depending on the dye used, how many times the hair is dyed, and the condition of the hair.
Bleaching
Bleaching is one way to remove color from hair, but it requires commitment. When a person bleaches their hair, it removes all pigment, including the dye and any natural color left over. The required supplies to bleach the hair include bleach powder and 20 or 40 volume lightener.
Vitamin C Treatment
An easy way to remove home hair color is with a mixture of vitamin C and shampoo. The mixture works on semi-permanent dyes better than permanent ones. Take two 1, 000 mg vitamin C tablets, crush them, and mix with 1/4 cup of shampoo. Apply it to the hair immediately and put the hair in a shower cap for 20 minutes before rinsing it out.
Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
Anti-dandruff shampoo removes hair color due to the chemicals in it. Using the shampoo two to three times can remove several shades of the hair color without damaging the hair. Those who just want their hair color to be a little lighter should use this method.
The Results of Using Each Method
Each method of removing dye contains different ingredients and formulations to consider. Some work better than others do, therefore it might be worth it to try more than one type of dye remover.
